Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has called upon farmers to embrace sugarcane farming in an effort to revive the stalled Mumias Sugar factory.
Barasa, while speaking during a church service at Our Lady of Consolata Bukaya Parish in Etenje Ward of Mumias West Sub-County on Sunday, said his talks with Mumias Sugar’s receiver manager PVR Rao of Sarrai Group resolved to consistently ensure timely payment of farmers.
Farmers will be paid on the fifth day upon delivery of sugarcane to the company, he said.
The Governor also said the manager agreed to his request to quash the persistent debitum (DR) that made farmers incur losses for almost a decade in the sugar industry.
Barasa reminded farmers to register through their respective ward administrators to get the county’s subsidized fertilizer as the planting season across the county starts in February.
