President William Ruto has cast uncertainty over the tarmacking of the Lwandeti–Lugari Station–Makutano road, dampening the hopes of area residents who had welcomed recent assurances from their MP.
Speaking during a church service at Friends School Kivaywa on Sunday, the President responded cautiously to a request by Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera for the road to be included in upcoming infrastructure projects. Ruto indicated that while the government is committed to ongoing development, the only confirmed project in the area remains the construction of the Turbo–Sikhendu–Makutano–Endebess road.
“Ile ingine ikienda Kitale amesema hiyo ingine ipige kona ikienda Lwandeti. Lakini sasa, vane, hii pesa nitatoa wapi. Nitang’ang’ana, si namna hiyo, kwa sababu sasa nyinyi mmenipatia kazi lazima nitimize,” the President told congregants, suggesting that budget constraints remain a significant hurdle.
His remarks seemed to contradict earlier statements by MP Nabwera, who had announced that plans were underway to finally tarmac the long-neglected Lwandeti–Makutano route—a key link in the region that has posed transport difficulties for residents for years.
Nabwera said the plan followed a recent meeting with Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, during which progress on major road projects in Lugari was discussed and affirmed.
Despite the President’s remarks, he reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the Turbo–Makutano–Sikhendu–Endebess road, which is already on schedule.
Residents, who have long decried poor infrastructure in the region, remain hopeful that the government will consider the Lwandeti road in future allocations.
