The girl from Mufutu Village in Lugari Ward, Lugari Constituency, who reported to a police station in Nairobi to trace her parents after running away from home, has spoken.
A WhatsApp post to help the girl trace her family went viral with the message: “The above girl is from Mufutu in Lugari. She got lost in Nairobi and ended up at Villa police Station in Embakasi. Whoever knows her people, pass the information to them.”
The girl by the name Becky Dina Makinia, 15, said she was persuaded by her friend to run away from home in Mufutu Village to Nairobi in November without the knowledge of her parents.
Becky says she was taken by the friend to her pal in the city, where she left her, and has been staying all the time until a stranger told her that she was wasting her time and needed to get back home.
Becky said she couldn’t trace her way back home because her friend, who took her away from home, was nowhere to be seen and she did not have her parents phone numbers.
She said the stranger escorted her to Villa Police Station in Imara Daima where she asked for help to get back home.
“I asked them for fare to get back home, it’s when they reached out to my family,” she said.
Yesterday, Dennis Manyengo, one of the candidates in the August 9 Lugari Ward MCA election, visited the police station to check on the girl and took her to his home after connecting with her uncle.
“I will travel home tomorrow (Wednesday) to take her back to her family,” Mr. Manyengo said.
What a police officer at Villa Police Station said
Nancy Olunga, a police officer who shared a viral post about the girl on WhatsApp, said she ran away after finishing secondary school and gone to the capital city, where she’s been working as a househelp.
She had said the girl’s employer took her to the Villa Police Station in Imara Daima after she stole property, which the employer later found.
The girl, who seemed to have lost her way home, mentioned her father as Robert Barasa, mother Sarah Barasa and area chief David Musambai.
She couldn’t, however, provide a phone number of any of them.
“She is a very small girl, barely 18 years old. She must have run away from home after finishing Form Four and has been in the city for quite some time, probably two years. She was once living with a man whom she stole from and was later chased away,” Ms. Olunga said.
