Teachers and students of Lunyito Secondary School took to the streets on Saturday in an electrifying celebration after two of their own secured spots in the national championships following their remarkable victories in the 2025 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One Games for the Western Region.
Jaigon Kipkemboi and Sherlyne Cheptoo, both Form Two students, etched their names in the school’s history by emerging as the top competitors in the boys’ and girls’ discus categories, respectively. Their stellar performances in the regional championships held in Busia from Wednesday to Friday have earned them the opportunity to compete at the national level, marking a significant milestone for their school.
The school’s games teacher, Atinga Norah, who has served at Lunyito, a sub-county school, for a decade, described the achievement as a defining moment. The institution proudly contributed two of the four students from Lugari advancing to the national level.
“We are thrilled by these results, which showcase our school’s growing potential in athletics. This is the first time we have students qualifying for nationals, and we are optimistic about advancing beyond that to the East African level,” she remarked in a phone interview.
Kipkemboi and Cheptoo now set their sights on the national showdown scheduled to take place in Mombasa from April 5 to 13. Aware of the heightened level of competition, the young athletes remain confident in their ability to rise to the challenge.
Ms. Atinga, who also teaches Kiswahili and CRE, expressed her deep admiration for the school’s overall progress, attributing part of the success to the leadership of their new principal, Mr. Sakwa Patrick.
“With Mr. Sakwa at the helm, we are not just improving in sports but also academically. We are confident that our mean score will rise in 2025,” she stated, adding that she also anticipates improved performance in her subjects.
The Lunyito community stands firmly behind Kipkemboi and Cheptoo, believing they will carry their winning momentum to Mombasa and beyond.
