Mumias Sugar roars back to life

Mumias has been stuck for 7 years since it closed down.

Seven years in a coma, the Mumias Sugar Company is slowly waking up from slumber with the product of the once reputable sugar brand expected back to the markets in a few weeks.

Despite the ongoing court battle, Uganda miller Sarrai Group started crushing 1000 tons of sugarcane per day for the last three days even as the miller continues wallowing in debt.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said the Mumias owes Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Sh1.2 billion but he has lobbied with the parastatal to reconnect the sugar factory with electricity.

“The case is before the Supreme Court. However, the Court of Appeal allowed the firm to run. The other day, they had a problem with Kenya Power who are claiming Sh1.2 billion. They said they pay Sh500 million. I went to Nairobi to talk with the Minister in charge,” Oparanya said.
