Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera has announced that Sh9.4 million has been allocated to a women’s economic empowerment initiative aimed at uplifting women across the constituency through financial support and job opportunities.

The program is designed to strengthen grassroots enterprises and improve livelihoods for hundreds of women involved in community-based savings and investment groups.

During a meeting with women’s groups in Chevaywa on Sunday, the MP unveiled a cheque from the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) while emphasizing that the funds are intended to transform the lives of women, rather than “merely end up in the hands of a few unknown individuals.”

“Together with other key stakeholders, we took deliberate steps to ensure that every coin is utilized effectively and reaches the intended beneficiaries,” he said. “We ensured that all women’s groups are duly registered and possess active bank accounts. KCB has trained their leaders on prudent financial management and accountability, and each group is linked to KCB for continued guidance, mentorship, and financial support.”

During a ceremony at the Chekalini Chiefs Ground on September 26, Nabwera, accompanied by leaders including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, presided over the issuance of cheques to beneficiaries drawn from all wards in Lugari. The MP said the initiative was designed to promote self-reliance among women and reduce overdependence on short-term political handouts.

“We want to see women in Lugari building sustainable businesses and employing others. This is not just about giving money—it’s about giving our women the power to change their lives,” Nabwera said during the event.

The MP also revealed that he has entered into agreements with contractors implementing constituency projects to prioritize the hiring of local women and youth, linking the empowerment initiative to direct job creation within Lugari.

Speaker Wetang’ula lauded the program, describing it as a model for inclusive development that puts women at the heart of economic growth. He urged other leaders to emulate Nabwera’s focus on empowerment rather than political theatrics.

Community leaders and beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that the funds will help them expand businesses and support their families.

The Women Economic Empowerment Program is expected to run continuously through Nabwera’s tenure, with future plans to introduce financial literacy training and cooperative investments for women in Lugari. Nabwera’s office has pledged to maintain transparency in fund distribution and monitor how the groups utilize the resources to ensure sustainability and accountability.
