Two people were injured on Monday morning after a freight train rammed into a truck at the Pamus Junction railway crossing along the KMTC–Lusaka Road in Bungoma County.
Witnesses said the truck, which was transporting salt, attempted to cross the railway line as the train approached. Despite the train crew hooting in warning, the driver was unable to clear the track in time. The impact caused the truck to overturn and block the railway line, drawing a large crowd to the scene.
Police and emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and rushed the injured, believed to be the truck driver and a train operator, to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for treatment.
In the chaotic moments following the crash, some residents reportedly stormed the overturned truck and looted goods from its cargo before officers intervened to disperse the crowd.
The incident has renewed calls from locals for the construction of an overpass or a safer alternative at the Pamus crossing, which they say has long posed a risk to motorists and pedestrians. Road safety advocates have also urged the national transport authorities to invest in long-term safety infrastructure to prevent similar collisions.
Kenya Railways has appealed to motorists to exercise caution when approaching level crossings and to always stop and check for oncoming trains before attempting to cross.
