As the May 15 deadline for political candidates’ registration for the August 9 general elections approaches, the number of those eyeing the gubernatorial seat in Trans Nzoia County has skyrocketed in recent days. The following are the two independent aspirants, in addition to the three with parties, who have declared their candidature.
1. Prof. Ben Wanjala
Prof. Ben Wanjala is a former county chief officer in charge of finance who was in charge during governor Patrick Khaemba’s first term. He is a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Botany, and Zoology from the University of Nairobi.
Prof. Wanjala, who spoke to Western Kenya Times, said he is ready to serve and deliver to the people of Trans Nzoia if elected to inherit from Governor Patrick Khaemba, who is serving his last term.
2. Bishop Jim Wakhungu
Bishop Jim Wakhungu Nduruchi is the chairperson of the independent candidates in Trans Nzoia.
Nduruchi, who has international diplomatic connections, stated that his government will provide 50% funding for overseas studies and has promised to establish Kitale University.
He also said he will introduce an exchange program on leadership and partnership, affordable housing and ensure all roads are tarmacked to ease transportation of farm produce to the market.
Bishop Nduruchi also said his administration will ensure there are better health services and that he will buy land to resettle squatters and free beddings for elderly people in the society.
The two independent candidates, who have not yet named their aspiring deputy governors, have challenged locals not to vote for parties but for individuals with the capability to lead and deliver services to the people.
The two will face off with Dr. Chris Wamalwa(Ford Kenya), George Natembeya (DAP-K) and Moses Khaoya (ODM).
