Trans Nzoia: Residents torch house, sugarcane plantation of cattle theft suspects

Suspects of a cattle theft syndicate in Kiminini Sub-county were treated to a horrific experience after irate residents burnt down a house and a sugarcane plantation.

This was triggered by an incident where a dairy cow belonging to a woman in Matunda was stolen and slaughtered, leaving behind its carcass.

The agitated mob stormed the home of Meshack Chalicha and his father, Zebedee Chalicha, armed with clubs and whips, set ablaze a house belonging to one of them and torched a three-acre sugarcane plantation before whisking the suspects to the nearest police station.

The arrested suspects are blamed for a number of cattle theft incidents that have been rocking the area for the past month.

Residents said they decided to take action owing to the reluctance of the local police to act in such cases.

The area chief, Sammy Yaola, while confirming the incident, told West FM that cases of cattle theft have been rampant and urged locals to be alert about the beef business in the area. He asked them to not take the law into their hands and work together with relevant authorities.
