The political union between President Ruto and ODM is facing growing uncertainty, with fresh signals pointing to a possible fallout within the broad-based government arrangement, according to a report published by Daily Nation.
ODM, led by Oburu Odinga, has raised concerns over what it describes as coercion and political intimidation. The party now warns it could reconsider its position in the alliance.
Speaking on the matter, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed cautioned that ODM’s participation in the union is not unconditional. He stressed that the party joined the arrangement to foster unity but would not hesitate to explore other political options if the partnership ceased to serve its intended purpose.
“We are not in this union by mistake or by invitation. We joined to foster unity, and if this agenda is no longer needed, we should be told because we don’t lack options,” Junet said, adding that ODM could chart its own course ahead of the 2027 elections.
The tensions come amid allegations that a powerful faction within the government is pressuring ODM legislators to align with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). There are also claims that Cabinet Secretaries have been warned against associating with ODM, further straining relations.
If ODM follows through on its threats, the fallout could significantly impact legislative dynamics in Parliament and weaken the unity narrative that has underpinned the current administration.
