The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a downward adjustment in fuel prices following a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products.
In an addendum to its April pricing review, EPRA said the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury revised VAT from 13 per cent to 8 per cent through Legal Notice No. 70 dated April 15, 2026. The regulator subsequently recalculated the maximum retail pump prices for the period between April 16 and May 14, 2026 to reflect the change.
As a result, the price of Super Petrol in Nairobi has decreased by KSh 9.37 per litre, while diesel has dropped by KSh 10.21 per litre. The price of kerosene, however, remains unchanged.
EPRA further noted that the subsidy on kerosene has been reduced from KSh 108.10 per litre to KSh 96.56 per litre under the new pricing structure.
The VAT reduction forms part of government measures aimed at easing the burden on consumers following recent sharp increases in fuel costs. President William Ruto had earlier indicated that tax adjustments would be used as a tool to cushion Kenyans from high energy prices driven by global market pressures.
The updated prices and their detailed breakdown have been published in EPRA’s annexed schedule, with the regulator maintaining that it will continue monitoring the situation to ensure stability in the energy sector.
The statement was signed by EPRA Acting Director General Joseph Oketch on April 15, 2026.
