A young journalist from Lumakanda Ward in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, has secured a television role in Uganda, marking a significant milestone in her media career.
Ruth Kitai, a former radio presenter from Munyuki Village, is now working with Mama TV Uganda based in Jinja City. She previously served at Sema FM, Lokoi FM and Radio Attanayeche in Kakuma, where she built her experience in broadcast journalism.
Speaking about her new role, the 29-year-old attributed her breakthrough to what she described as divine favour and professional recognition. She said her name was recommended for the opportunity, leading to an interview that resulted in her securing the contract.
At Mama TV, Kitai serves as both a presenter and a marketing executive, contributing to a station that runs a wide range of programmes including news, sports, comedy and music on one of the best TV channels in Uganda.
She noted that her passion for journalism has always been driven by a desire to be a voice for society.
“I am a woman with dreams, and that is what inspired me to go beyond,” she said.
Kitai cited veteran Citizen Radio news presenter Christine Ojiambo as her role model, saying she admired her composure and professionalism from a young age. She also acknowledged the support of her parents, who have consistently believed in her abilities and celebrated her achievements.
Despite relocating to a neighbouring country, Kitai said she remains deeply connected to her Kenyan roots and is committed to promoting her culture even while working outside the country.
Recently, she was among the media team that accompanied His Majesty King Sir Jude Mudoma III during a visit to Kenya on April 29, an experience she described as remarkable.
Looking ahead, Kitai expressed optimism about her career growth, noting that she believes greater opportunities lie ahead as more people continue to trust her work.
She encouraged aspiring journalists to remain patient and committed, emphasizing that success in the profession is gradual.
“Journalism is a process. Do not expect to be upstairs without using the stairs,” she said.
