A sombre mood has engulfed parts of Bungoma County following the killing of a public health officer at his home in the Forest View area along the Musikoma-Bumula Road.
The medic, identified as Pascal Wakafura, was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants shortly after arriving at his residence on Monday evening. Neighbours said they heard distress screams moments after he entered the compound before his body was later discovered near the home.
Reports indicate that Wakafura’s vehicle engine was still running while the gate remained open, raising suspicion that the attackers may have ambushed him immediately after he arrived.
Police officers visited the scene and launched investigations into the incident, with authorities yet to establish the motive behind the killing.
The incident has triggered concern among residents and leaders over rising insecurity in the area. Local leaders condemned the killing and called on security agencies to move swiftly to arrest those responsible.
Kanduyi MP John Makali urged the government to strengthen security operations in Bungoma, saying residents have recently witnessed an increase in violent incidents.
Residents have also appealed for intensified night patrols and improved community policing to help curb insecurity in the county.
Wakafura has been described by colleagues and members of the community as a dedicated health officer who served residents with commitment and professionalism.
Investigations into the murder are ongoing.
