Cape Verde reaches World Cup round of 32

Cape Verde have scripted one of the biggest stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after qualifying for the Round of 32 in their debut appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

The Blue Sharks secured their place in the knockout stage following a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in Houston on Friday. Combined with Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the other Group H fixture, the result saw Cape Verde finish second in the group behind Spain and advance to the next round.

Ranked 67th in the world before the tournament, Cape Verde completed the group stage unbeaten, drawing all three of their matches. They opened their historic campaign by frustrating European champions Spain in a goalless draw before battling back to earn a thrilling 2-2 result against two-time world champions Uruguay. Another resilient defensive display against Saudi Arabia proved enough to seal qualification and spark emotional celebrations among players and supporters.

The achievement makes Cape Verde the smallest nation by population ever to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage. With a population of just over 500,000, the island nation has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprise packages, earning widespread praise for its disciplined defending and fearless performances against more established football powers.

Cape Verde’s reward is a blockbuster Round of 32 clash against defending champions Argentina on July 3 in Miami. While few expected the tournament debutants to reach the knockout rounds, the Blue Sharks will now look to continue their fairytale run against Lionel Messi and the reigning world champions.
