Political differences among Western Kenya leaders have taken a back seat as prominent Luhya politicians converge at Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale’s Malinya home to condole with him following the death of his wife, Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale.
Gloria died suddenly on Saturday, August 15, after reportedly suffering a heart attack. She was the mother of eight of Khalwale’s children.
In the days leading to her burial, leaders who have often found themselves on opposite sides of the political divide have visited the bereaved senator, offering messages of comfort and solidarity to the family.
Among those who have paid their respects are National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, alongside other political leaders from the region and beyond.

Wetang’ula visited the Khalwale family in Malinya on Thursday, August 20, conveying condolences on his own behalf, that of his family and Parliament. He also delivered President William Ruto’s message of condolence to the family.
The Speaker described Gloria as a kind and hospitable woman who warmly welcomed visitors whenever Khalwale hosted them at his home. He urged Kenyans to stand with bereaved families through comfort, kindness, solidarity and prayer.
Governor Barasa also visited Khalwale at his Malinya home and paid tribute to the late Gloria. Khalwale publicly acknowledged the governor’s visit, thanking him for standing with the family during its period of grief.
Khalwale has previously clashed publicly with both Wetang’ula and Barasa over Kakamega politics. The leaders’ appearance together at the senator’s home has therefore offered a rare display of unity beyond political competition.
Natembeya, who had earlier sent a condolence message, said he stood with Khalwale, his children and the entire family during the difficult period. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, another prominent Luhya leader, also sent his condolences to Khalwale, describing him as Omwami and wishing Gloria eternal rest.
Sifuna is also expected to lead a Linda Mwananchi procession to Malinya today, Friday, where he and his supporters will join other leaders and mourners for Gloria’s funeral at the Khalwale family home in Malinya, Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County.
