Just a year after setting up her business at Panpaper Market in Lugari, local entrepreneur Sara Were, popularly known as Mama Safi, is giving back to the community in appreciation of the support she has received throughout her journey.
Through Mama Safi Collection located along the Turbo–Sikhendu Road, Ms. Were set out to make affordable clothing more accessible to residents, offering a wide variety of clothes for men, women and children without requiring them to travel long distances in search of such items.
As she marked one year in business, Mama Safi chose to celebrate the milestone by extending a helping hand to young people through sports.
As part of her Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, she donated two sets of football jerseys and shorts to Lumama FC and Lwanda Lugari FC during a handover ceremony held on Saturday.
Mama Safi said the initiative was aimed at supporting young footballers by providing them with proper kits to train and compete comfortably while creating an environment that encourages them to nurture and develop their talents.
“For me, young people are the ones who need to be assisted the most because they have great potential. I have given out these uniforms to show that even with the little I have, I can share with these young people who have promising talents that can take them somewhere in life,” Mama Safi told the Western Kenya Times.
Players and officials from Lumama FC and Lwanda Lugari FC welcomed the donation, saying the new uniforms would boost the teams’ morale and strengthen their sense of unity as they prepare to participate in local competitions.
Mama Safi also used the occasion to urge young people across the country to reject violence and resist attempts by politicians or other individuals to use them to advance divisive agendas.
Instead, she encouraged them to channel their energy into nurturing their talents, building businesses and engaging in other productive activities that could help secure their futures.
Her gesture, though simple, highlights the role local businesses can play in supporting and empowering communities.
For Mama Safi, giving back is not necessarily about having great wealth, but about sharing whatever one has to make a difference.
