Several people are dead while after a fuel tanker overturned and burst into flames along the Eldoret–Webuye highway near Paul Boit Secondary School on Thursday night.
The tanker crashed in the Juakali area, and locals reportedly converged on the overturned vehicle to scoop fuel before it exploded, according to Daily Nation. Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sichirani confirmed at least two deaths, though search and recovery operations were ongoing amid fears the toll could climb further.
The Kenya Red Cross classified the incident as a mass-casualty event, saying its teams were working alongside police and firefighters at the scene. The organization urged motorists to keep clear of the area so emergency crews could operate without obstruction.
Several survivors with severe burns were taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for treatment. Traffic along the Eldoret–Webuye corridor was disrupted for a time as authorities secured the site and continued rescue efforts.
As of Friday morning, officials had not released a final casualty count, with rescue teams still working to determine the full scale of the tragedy.
