The circumstances surrounding how a 16-year-old girl came to be left alone at her family home on the night she was allegedly defiled by Lumakanda OCS Wycliffe Kwendo have raised questions, even as police investigate the serious allegations against the senior officer.
The family, during an interview with journalists on Monday, struggled to justify why they left the minor behind after Kwendo allegedly instructed the family to move to a nearby bar after telling them that a multi-agency security operation was about to be conducted in the Kambi Moto area of Kipkaren River.
Journalists wondered why a family could evacuate and leave a young girl behind, at night, and in a deserted home that would soon be combed in an alleged security operation.
What the family said
The family explained that they understood Kwendo’s warning to mean that only adults needed to leave, fearing they could be harassed during the alleged operation, while the children would remain safe at home.
However, that explanation raises a fundamental question: if the family believed the operation posed enough of a threat to require the adults to evacuate, why did they consider it safe to leave a 16-year-old girl alone in the same house? The apparent contradiction is particularly striking given that the family had allegedly been warned that the area was about to be subjected to a multi-agency security operation.
