At least 24 people died on Sunday when a bus carrying mourners home from the burial of Bishop Isaiah Kiganane collided with a tipper truck at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The Power of the Word Church International bus was returning to Mombasa from Marakusi village in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, where clergy, church members, and relatives from across the country had gathered for the bishop’s funeral.
Several passengers were injured and are receiving treatment at hospitals in Makueni County.
Area traffic commandant Benjamin Mwanthi said the bus driver reportedly tried to overtake other vehicles before the collision. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
