Thousands of households and businesses across Western Kenya were left without electricity on Wednesday night after a nationwide power outage affected several parts of the country.
The blackout, which also impacted Nairobi, the Coast region, South Nyanza and parts of the Rift Valley, disrupted normal activities as homes, offices, schools and businesses experienced an unexpected loss of power.
In major towns across Western Kenya, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia and Vihiga, residents reported waking up to darkness, with many businesses delaying operations while others turned to backup generators to continue serving customers.
Kenya Power attributed the outage to a technical fault on the national electricity transmission network, saying the disruption affected multiple regions simultaneously.
The utility said its technical teams were working with the relevant agencies to identify the source of the problem and restore electricity to affected areas as quickly as possible.
The outage sparked widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing frustration over repeated nationwide blackouts and urging authorities to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
By Thursday morning, restoration efforts were still underway, with Kenya Power assuring customers that electricity would be restored progressively as engineers resolved the fault.
