Thousands of electricity consumers across Western Kenya have been left without power following a fire incident at the Musaga Substation in Kakamega County.
In a customer alert issued at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, Kenya Power said the outage has affected customers in Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya and parts of Vihiga counties.
The utility company said the fire disrupted electricity supply to the affected regions, leading to a widespread blackout for homes, businesses and other electricity users.
Kenya Power noted that its technical teams are working to restore power by rerouting electricity through alternative supply lines as efforts continue to address the incident at the substation.
“We are re-routing power through alternative supply lines to restore electricity to customers progressively as the incident at the substation is addressed,” the company said in the statement.
The power distributor acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outage and apologised to affected customers, assuring them that restoration efforts are underway.
The cause of the fire was not immediately disclosed, and Kenya Power has yet to indicate how long it will take for electricity supply to be fully restored across the affected counties.
