Angry boda boda riders set a trailer ablaze at Kanduyi on Sunday evening after it was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a fellow rider.
The accident happened at about 7pm along the Kanduyi–Malaba highway, near the area known as Drips. A trailer knocked down a motorcycle rider identified as Douglas from Siritamu, who died in the crash.
According to initial reports, the trailer driver fled the scene. Riders who gave chase failed to catch him, and police officers who responded were also unable to arrest the driver.
Tension escalated as the crowd of riders grew increasingly angry. They reportedly forced the police officers to leave the scene before setting the trailer on fire.
Preliminary accounts suggest the trailer and the motorcycle were travelling in the same direction when the crash occurred. The exact circumstances that led to the collision remain unclear.
The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety along the busy Kanduyi–Malaba highway, a major route used by heavy commercial vehicles heading to and from the Malaba border. Some residents have called on traffic police to step up enforcement and patrols along the stretch, which has seen frequent accidents involving motorcyclists.
