Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement are set to take their political mobilization campaign to Homa Bay County on Sunday, August 16, in what is expected to be a major test of the movement’s growing influence in Nyanza.
The campaign is scheduled to make three stops, beginning at Nyandiwa at 10am, followed by Sindo at noon and Homa Bay Town at 2pm.
The Homa Bay tour comes after Linda Mwananchi conducted political engagements in several counties across Western Kenya, including Busia, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, and Kakamega. The movement has been using the tours to mobilize residents ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna, who has emerged as one of the leading figures in the movement, is expected to be joined by Siaya Governor James Orengo and other leaders opposed to the current direction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The rally carries particular political significance because Homa Bay has traditionally been one of ODM’s strongest bases. All elected MPs, the senator, and the governor in the county currently come from the party, according to Homa Bay ODM chairman Peter Kaluma.
The turnout at Sunday’s events could therefore provide an indication of whether Linda Mwananchi is gaining traction in the region and whether ODM’s traditional political dominance is facing a serious challenge.
Security concerns
The rally has also attracted heightened attention over security concerns.
Linda Mwananchi organizers have alleged that there are plans to disrupt the event and prevent some of their supporters from accessing Homa Bay. The movement has called for increased police security ahead of the rally.
Orengo has insisted that the rally will proceed despite the alleged threats, arguing that Kenyans have a constitutional right to assemble and express themselves peacefully.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, meanwhile, has assured organizers and participants that the government will provide security during the event while warning against attempts to disrupt the meeting or engage in criminal activities.
The security debate follows an earlier incident in Homa Bay in which six people were arrested following an alleged attack on members of the Linda Mwananchi rally planning team. The incident briefly triggered protests and disruption of business in Homa Bay Town.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, on the other hand, has warned Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders against staging chaos as a reverse-psychology tactic to attract sympathy and rally political support during their tour of the lakeside county on Sunday
