Prior to the 2022 General Election, little was known about Edwin Sifuna’s political future beyond his witty interjections on national TV and the confidence and poise with which he addressed issues affecting the country. Today, Sifuna has emerged as one of Kenya’s most talked-about politicians, commanding attention both within political circles and among the wider public.
As a Kenyan lawyer and politician, Sifuna’s rise in national politics has been defined by his sharp communication, political loyalty, and willingness to confront opponents head-on. From his early years as a lawyer to becoming one of the most recognizable voices in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Sifuna has built a reputation as a politician who rarely shies away from difficult political battles.
Today, he serves as the senator for Nairobi City County, a position he won in the 2022 general election. He has also emerged as one of the leading figures behind the Linda Mwananchi movement, which puts a huge claim on the country’s leadership ahead of the 2022 general election.
Early life and family
Edwin Sifuna was born on May 22, 1982, in Kakamega County, Mumias sub-county, and was raised in a working-class family. According to his official biography, his father worked as a civil servant with the defunct Municipal Council, while his mother was a teacher at Moi Primary School in Bungoma before her retirement.
He grew up alongside two brothers and two sisters, with family playing an important role in shaping his outlook on life. His background in a working-class household has also featured prominently in the story he tells about his journey into public life.

His rural home is in Siaka village, near Bungoma National Polytechnic in Sang’alo, just a few kilometres from Bungoma town.
Education and legal career
Sifuna began his education at Kakamega Township Primary School before joining Musingu High School, where he completed his secondary education.
He later joined the University of Nairobi to study law, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He proceeded to the Kenya School of Law, where he obtained a postgraduate diploma in law in 2007, before being admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2008. His legal training provided the foundation for a career that would eventually move from the courtroom into the highly competitive world of Kenyan politics.
Onset of Sifuna’s political journey
Sifuna’s political career developed through his involvement in opposition politics before he became a household name within ODM.
He served in political advisory roles within the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) and later the National Super Alliance (NASA), both led by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odina. In 2017, he sought the ODM nomination to contest the Kanduyi parliamentary seat but lost in the party primaries.
His political fortunes changed when ODM later backed him for the Nairobi senatorial race. Although he did not win the seat in 2017, the contest gave him greater national visibility and strengthened his position within the party.
In February 2018, Sifuna was appointed ODM Secretary-General, replacing Ababu Namwamba. The position placed him at the center of the party’s political operations and made him one of Raila Odinga’s most visible defenders.
The ODM years
As ODM Secretary General, Sifuna became a familiar face in Kenya’s political debates. His role involved communicating the party’s position on major national issues, defending its leadership, and participating in political negotiations.
His fiery press conferences and often confrontational exchanges with government and opposition figures helped establish him as one of the country’s most recognizable political communicators.
His political relationship with the late Raila Odinga also became an important part of his public identity. For years, Sifuna was among the politicians most closely associated with Raila’s political camp and was frequently seen defending the ODM leader and the party’s opposition position.

However, the political environment changed significantly following Raila Odinga’s death and subsequent disagreements over ODM’s direction. Sifuna’s relationship with the party leadership has since become the subject of an internal political and legal battle.
In July 2026, Sifuna was removed from the position of Secretary-General
Sifuna as Nairobi Senator
As discussed earlier, Sifuna eventually returned to the ballot in the 2022 general election, this time successfully contesting the Nairobi senatorial seat. He defeated his main competitors to become Nairobi’s elected senator.
His role in the Senate has given him a platform beyond party politics. He has raised issues affecting Nairobi residents and participated in debates on governance, accountability, education, security, and the management of public resources.
Linda Mwananchi and a new political chapter
Sifuna’s political journey entered a new phase in 2026 with the emergence of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Linda Mwananchi, meaning “Protect the Citizen,” has become a political platform associated with Sifuna and his supporters as they seek to build a grassroots political network ahead of the 2027 general election.
The movement has been expanding its presence beyond Nairobi, with mobilization activities and political tours in different parts of the country. In July 2026, Sifuna said Linda Mwananchi had entered its election phase and was focusing on building organized grassroots structures before unveiling a broader governance platform.
The movement has also attempted to distinguish itself through grassroots mobilization and small contributions from ordinary supporters. Sifuna has said the campaign is being powered by small donations, including contributions of as little as Sh10, rather than relying entirely on wealthy political financiers.

Linda Mwananchi has therefore become more than a slogan associated with Sifuna. It represents an attempt to create a wider political identity around citizen participation, accountability, and an alternative approach to governance.
The movement has also attracted attention because of its potential role in the 2027 opposition politics. Sifuna has insisted that it should not be viewed as a vehicle for splitting the opposition vote, saying he supports efforts to have the opposition work together and field one team in the next election.
For Sifuna, the movement could provide an opportunity to build a political identity beyond his long association with Raila Odinga and ODM.
Personal life
Despite his high-profile political career, Sifuna has generally kept much of his personal life away from the political spotlight. He has spoken about the importance of family and his working-class upbringing, which he credits as part of the foundation of his character and resilience.
His public image, however, has largely been shaped by his political career, particularly his outspoken communication style and his willingness to engage his opponents directly.
