A family from Kambi Moto Village in Lumakanda Ward, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, has been left in shock after their 20-year-old daughter reportedly delivered a baby without a head.
According to the girl’s mother, Kristine Nelima, her daughter was seven months pregnant when she started experiencing labour pains on Monday this week. She was rushed to Hope Hospital, where she delivered a baby who was reportedly already dead and had no head.
Speaking during an interview with West TV Media, Nelima said her daughter, who is married to a neighbour, called her at around 5 a.m. and asked whether a pregnant woman could experience monthly periods.
“My daughter is married to someone who lives nearby. She called me at around 5 a.m. and asked whether a pregnant woman can experience monthly periods. I asked her how many months pregnant she was, and she told me she was seven months. I told her that perhaps she was having a miscarriage and advised her to go to the hospital,” Nelima said.
Nelima said she later received a shocking phone call while she had gone to buy avocados. She was informed that her grandchild had died in the womb and that the body had been placed in a box.
“I was told that the baby had died in the womb and had been put in a box. They told me the baby had no head; only the shoulders and part of the body could be seen,” she said.
The family was reportedly allowed to take the baby’s remains and proceed with the burial.
Nelima further claimed that her daughter had been attending regular antenatal clinics at a health facility in Turbo and had repeatedly been assured that the pregnancy was progressing well. However, the family was later informed that the baby may have died in the womb about three months earlier.
“My daughter used to attend the clinic on the 20th of every month and was always assured that the baby was okay. We were shocked to learn that the baby had died in the womb,” she added.
Community leaders and residents of Kambi Moto Village have expressed shock over the incident, saying the young woman had been attending regular antenatal clinics and possessed a clinic booklet documenting her visits.
