Siaya Governor James Orengo has declared himself a serious presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, a move that could reshape the emerging political equation within the Linda Mwananchi movement and put his relationship with fellow principal Edwin Sifuna under fresh scrutiny.
Orengo made the declaration on Friday, August 28, while speaking during the burial of Steven Onyango, son of Linda Mwananchi advocate Newton Ogada, in Homa Bay County.“From today, know that I am a serious presidential candidate,” Orengo said, while taking a swipe at President William Ruto’s record on constitutionalism and governance.
The announcement comes as Linda Mwananchi seeks to transform itself into a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 elections. Orengo had earlier announced that the movement would transition into a political party anchored on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and a national agenda.
But Orengo’s declaration introduces an intriguing question: where does this leave Edwin Sifuna?The Nairobi Senator has emerged as one of the most visible faces of Linda Mwananchi and has previously hinted at presidential ambitions, with reports indicating that his political activities have increasingly been viewed through the lens of a possible 2027 State House bid.
Sifuna, Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have been among the prominent figures associated with the movement. At a rally in Homa Bay earlier this month, Sifuna sought to dismiss reports of divisions among the principals, insisting that he, Orengo and Babu remained united.
Orengo’s latest declaration, however, could test that unity as the movement moves closer to determining its presidential ticket.The veteran politician is not a newcomer to presidential politics. He previously contested the presidency in 2002 and has remained a prominent figure in Kenya’s opposition politics for decades.
