Kenyan comedian Jaymoh Decin has sparked debate after making a dramatic entrance at his Sudhee Experience show while dressed to mimic controversial preacher Prophet David Owuor.
Jaymoh appeared on stage in an outfit inspired by Owuor before making a theatrical entrance suspended by a rope, a move that immediately drew attention from the audience and social media users.
The stunt was part of Jaymoh’s debut major live comedy show, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi on Saturday. The event marked his 10th year in comedy and had been promoted for nearly a year.
Renewed Owuor controversy
The choice to portray Owuor has added another layer to Jaymoh’s already established history of parodying public figures.
Earlier this year, Jaymoh had faced criticism after impersonating Owuor in comedy content. His approach to parody has previously included other high-profile figures, including President William Ruto and journalist Jeff Koinange.
The Owuor parody has proved particularly sensitive, however, with followers of the preacher previously criticizing comedians for turning his ministry and religious activities into comedy.
In April, for instance, followers of Owuor criticized comedian Mammito after she released a skit parodying the preacher and his alleged miracles, arguing that religious figures and sacred matters should not be used for entertainment.
Jaymoh’s latest performance has therefore reignited debate over where comedians should draw the line when parodying religious personalities.
Some social media users have praised the comedian’s creativity and theatricality, while others have questioned whether the portrayal goes too far, particularly given the religious following surrounding Owuor.
Jaymoh doubles down on his comedy style
The controversial entrance also fits into Jaymoh’s broader approach to comedy, which relies heavily on impersonations and exaggerated portrayals of prominent personalities.
In a previous interview, the comedian acknowledged that his parodies do not always land well with the people being impersonated, saying that he apologizes when his content negatively affects people.
The comedian’s Sudhee Experience had already generated attention before the show after a series of controversies and online exchanges involving other entertainers.
