A Juja mother is mourning the loss of four of her five newborn babies, hours after making headlines for delivering quintuplets through normal delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Mercy Kanini delivered the five babies on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, in what was described as a rare and remarkable birth.
The babies were born prematurely, with each weighing between 630 grammes and 800 grammes. Due to their extremely low birth weights, all five were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi for specialized neonatal care.
However, four of the newborns died at KNH, leaving Kanini and her husband, Evans, devastated. One baby survived and remained under specialized medical care at the hospital, according to reports.
The tragedy came shortly after the family celebrated the unexpected arrival of five babies. Kanini had reportedly been expecting four babies before the delivery.
She arrived at Thika Level Five Hospital and delivered the first baby shortly after admission. Medical staff initially prepared to perform a Caesarean section for the remaining babies, but after further assessment, she was allowed to proceed with a normal delivery.
