The government has announced a transition from the Social Health Authority (SHA) Provider Portal to a new Health Management Information System (HMIS) to manage key healthcare operations across the country.
The Ministry of Health says the new system will handle processes such as patient verification and electronic claims processing as part of efforts to improve efficiency, accountability, and the management of health information.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the extension of the transition deadline from September 30 to October 30, 2026, giving healthcare facilities additional time to complete the migration and address technical challenges.
The ministry said all 6,427 public Level 2 to Level 4 health facilities had transitioned to HMIS by October 1. At Level 5, four facilities had completed the process, while 23 others were at different stages of migration.
The government is also supporting 518 contracted faith-based health facilities, although only 38 had completed the transition by October 1.
Private healthcare facilities operating their own HMIS platforms are required to meet certification and interoperability standards set by the Digital Health Agency.
Duale assured Kenyans that patients would continue receiving medical services during the transition and would not be denied treatment because a facility had not completed the migration.
The government says the new platform is intended to reduce reliance on paper-based processes and enable health information, patient records, and claims to be handled more efficiently across healthcare facilities.
The transition, first announced by the Ministry of Health in June 2026, does not mean SHA is being abolished or renamed HMIS. Rather, HMIS is being adopted as the digital platform for managing healthcare processes linked to SHA.
The October 30 deadline is intended to give facilities that have yet to complete the migration more time to comply with the new system’s requirements.
