Fresh details have emerged surrounding the death of Kakamega County Polytechnic principal Carolyne Khamete, with her family revealing that she had reportedly received threatening phone calls days before she went missing.
According to her mother, Khamete had expressed fears for her safety, alleging that unknown individuals, believed to be suppliers, had been pressuring her over unpaid debts linked to the institution. The family says the calls were persistent and left the principal increasingly worried in the days leading up to her disappearance.
Khamete, who worked at Kakamega County Polytechnic, was last seen after reporting to work. She later informed relatives that she was heading to meet a director, after which she could not be reached again.
She was reported missing for several days before her body was eventually discovered along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu County. The discovery raised questions due to the distance between her workplace in Kakamega County and the location where her body was found in Kisumu County.
The family has since raised concerns over the circumstances of her death, pointing to inconsistencies and demanding a thorough investigation. They have also questioned initial assumptions surrounding the cause of death, insisting that preliminary findings do not fully explain how she ended up in Kisumu.
Her father further indicated that post-mortem findings did not support claims that she drowned, deepening suspicions and fueling calls for answers.
Kakamega Woman Rep Elsie Muhanda, while condoling with the family in Ikolomani Constituency, pointed an accusing finger to Kakamega First Lady Janet Kasili Barasa of having a role in the death of the principal.
“What were you doing there during the postmortem even before her family arrived? You must tell us what happened to the principal!” Ms. Muhanda said while addressing mourners.
