A 78-year-old woman was found murdered in her home after a suspected robbery and sexual assault by unknown assailants on Wednesday night in Bahati area, Lumakanda Ward, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.
The victim, identified as Beatrice Cleopah, was discovered on Thursday morning by her Grade 8 grandchild, identified as Momanyi, who found his room locked from the outside.
According to the deceased’s daughter, Mary Cleopah, who spoke to WKT, the grandson accessed the main house through a window, where he found the house ransacked and items thrown on top of his grandmother’s body.
Mary further revealed the attackers made away with property including cereals, utensils, and other household valuables. The exact time of the attack remains unclear.
“She was a devoted Christian and hardworking farmer who grew maize and vegetables and cared for her grandchild,” she added.
The family revealed that the deceased had previously been targeted by thieves, with an earlier incident involving the theft of utensils and other items.
Her body has been moved to Village of Hope Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted on Saturday. The family has already recorded a statement at Lumakanda Police Station as investigations continue.
