Sifuna stuns rivals with confident show of force in Kisumu

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna delivered a commanding and confident show of force in Kisumu on Sunday, drawing a massive, energized crowd that caught rivals off guard and underscored his growing influence within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The Linda Mwananchi rally, which came amid heightened political tension in the lakeside city, attracted supporters from across the region who lined the streets to Sifuna and his allies. Among those present were Babu Owino and James Orengo, both of whom have been associated with the emerging faction pushing for a new direction within the party.

In the days leading up to the event, concerns had been raised over possible disruptions, with local leaders and security agencies urging calm. Rival political camps had also mobilised, raising fears of confrontation. However, the rally proceeded without major incidents, despite a few clashes with goons, with organisers framing it as a peaceful platform to engage citizens and advocate for reforms.

On Sunday, parts of Kisumu—particularly key access routes and gathering points—were filled with chanting supporters, many of them youths, who turned out in large numbers to back the movement. The atmosphere was vibrant, with convoys, songs and political messaging dominating the day.

Addressing the crowd, Sifuna emphasised the need to “protect the voice of the people,” positioning the Linda Mwananchi initiative as a grassroots-driven effort aimed at reshaping the party’s future. The messaging reflected broader internal debates within ODM over leadership, direction and strategy in the evolving political landscape.

Despite the strong turnout, the rally also exposed divisions within the region, with reports of counter-mobilisation by sections of residents opposed to the initiative. The mixed reactions highlighted ongoing contestation for influence in a region traditionally seen as a stronghold of the party.

The Kisumu event carries significant political weight, coming at a time when ODM is navigating internal shifts following the influence and legacy of party leader Raila Odinga.
