The High Court has sentenced former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Major Peter Mwaura Mugure to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering his wife and their two children in a case that shocked the nation.
Justice Martin Muya delivered the sentence after ruling that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mugure killed his wife, Joyce Syombua, 31, and their children, Shanice Maua, 10, and Prince Michael, 5. The killings occurred in Nanyuki in 2019.
The court heard that the former military officer lured his family to the Nanyuki Airbase before carrying out the murders and later disposed of the bodies in a shallow grave in Thigithu, Laikipia County. Investigators said the crime had been carefully planned in an attempt to evade a court order requiring him to pay monthly child maintenance.
In his judgment, Justice Muya described the killings as barbaric and said the gravity of the offence warranted the harshest punishment available. The judge noted that the victims included two young children who were entirely dependent on their parents for protection and care.
The conviction brought to an end a lengthy trial that had drawn widespread public attention since the family disappeared in 2019. Their bodies were later discovered after investigations linked Mugure to their deaths.
Prosecutors argued that the former KDF major not only killed his family but also took deliberate steps to conceal the crime. The court agreed that the evidence presented demonstrated premeditation and a clear intention to cover up the murders.
Family members of the victims welcomed the verdict, saying it had taken years of waiting to see justice served. The case has reignited debate over domestic violence and the need for stronger protection mechanisms for spouses and children facing threats within the family.
With the life sentence, Mugure will remain in prison for the murders of his wife and two children, bringing a close to one of Kenya’s most disturbing family homicide cases involving a former senior military officer.
