A woman has accused teachers at Forest Primary School in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, of assaulting her and her father following a dispute over lunch levies for her Grade 7 brother.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, after the boy was sent home over unpaid lunch levies despite having cleared other school fees.
The woman, identified as Makena, reportedly contacted the school’s headteacher, David Simiyu, requesting that her brother be allowed to sit for examinations that were scheduled to begin that day and take lunch at home.
After the headteacher allegedly declined, Makena and her brother sought intervention from education officials, who reportedly contacted the school and instructed Simiyu to allow the boy to sit the examination.
Makena later returned to the school and went to the headteacher’s office, where a confrontation allegedly ensued.
In her account, Simiyu grabbed her by the collar and ordered her out before two other teachers, identified as Naphtali Odunga and John Khamala, allegedly joined in assaulting her.
She further alleged that the teachers dragged her to the staffroom, where her hands were tied with a rope as the assault continued. Makena claimed that a school watchman also participated in the assault after being instructed to bring the rope.
Her father reportedly arrived at the school and began recording the incident but was also allegedly assaulted when he intervened.
The account further claims that Makena pleaded with female teachers for help, alleging that she had sustained injuries and was bleeding. Two neighbors reportedly intervened after hearing her father call for assistance.
Makena was subsequently taken to the hospital.
