Home set ablaze as suspected motorbike thief is killed in Lugari

A family in Nabemo Village, Mukuyu Sub-location, Mautuma Ward in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, has come forward after a suspected mob descended on their homestead and set one of their houses ablaze.

The incident is reported to have unfolded in three separate waves between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., with the attackers later targeting the home of 26-year-old David Mudanya over claims linking him to a string of theft cases.

The coordinated night raids, which affected several homes in the area, are also said to be connected to the killing of a suspected motorcycle thief, with Mudanya believed to be associated with the alleged criminal network.

His grandmother, Celine Mutiva, expressed confusion over the events leading up to the incident, stating that unknown individuals came to their home repeatedly.

Mimi siwezi jua. Walikuja mara ya kwanza saa tisa, mara ya pili saa kumi na mbili asubuhi (I don’t understand why. They stormed my home at (around) 3 a.m., 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.),” she said.

Mutiva strongly defended her grandson, maintaining that he is not involved in any criminal activities. She noted that Mudanya has been working in Khaoya, Eldoret, and has been the one taking care of her.

“My son is not a thief. He has been taking care of me through honest work,” she stated.

She added that, to her knowledge, he has never been associated with wrongdoing.

Mbele ya macho ya Mungu, sijawahi kusikia akifanya mambo mabaya. Nimesikia uchungu sana (I swear to God, my son has never wronged anyone. It’s painful),” she said.

Meanwhile, residents claim that Mudanya is among suspected thieves, allegations that reportedly led to the mob attacking his house.

The incident has raised concern among residents, with calls for restraint and adherence to the rule of law as authorities are expected to investigate the matter further.
