A man identified as Elvis Opiyo, reportedly an officer with the National Intelligence Service (NIS), is at the center of serious allegations involving an acid attack following the collapse of a long-term extramarital relationship.
According to information obtained, Opiyo, who is married with two children, had been stationed in Isiolo for an extended period on official duty, while his family remained at home. During this time, he is said to have maintained an eight-year relationship with a woman identified as Mary Claire, 24, a member of the Redemption Ministers choir affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church.
He was arrested on Monday morning in a joint operation involving a team linked to Mike Sonko and police officers, and is currently being held at Kibera Police Station.
Sources indicate that the relationship began years ago, with Claire’s family reportedly aware of the arrangement. Opiyo is said to have played a significant role in Claire’s life, financing her education from secondary school through to university and providing ongoing financial support to both her and her family.
However, the relationship allegedly came at a cost to Opiyo’s family, who reportedly endured emotional distress amid claims of disrespect and public humiliation. It is alleged that Claire at times openly asserted her position in Opiyo’s life, further straining the situation.
The situation reportedly took a dramatic turn after Claire graduated last year. She is said to have ended the relationship, informing Opiyo that she had moved on and was unwilling to remain in a polygamous arrangement.
Sources claim that Opiyo struggled to accept the breakup and made several attempts to reconcile, including reaching out to Claire’s family. The rejection is said to have deeply affected him, with reports indicating that he attempted suicide two months ago but survived.
In a troubling escalation, Opiyo is now alleged to have contemplated harming Claire and is accused of orchestrating a plan to have her attacked using sulphuric acid.
