Residents of Laini Moja Village in Sango Ward, Likuyani Constituency, Kakamega County, are reeling after unknown assailants broke into a local farmer’s cattle shed and brutally maimed two bulls, cutting their legs in an attack that has left the community on edge.
Peter Ngathi, owner of the animals, said he is at a loss to explain the attack, insisting he has no known disputes with anyone that could explain such an act of malice.
According to Ngathi, he checked on his cattle around midnight and found them resting peacefully. It was not until he returned at about 10 a.m. that he discovered the grim aftermath: both bulls had been attacked, their legs slashed.
“They are two bulls that I use to pull a cart, and I have never had a disagreement with anyone,” Ngathi said, visibly troubled by the senselessness of the attack.
For Ngathi and his family, the bulls were more than livestock—they were a lifeline. He had sold off his chickens and ducks to raise the funds needed to acquire them, viewing the animals as a worthwhile investment in his family’s livelihood.
The incident has rattled residents, who say it is the latest sign of deteriorating security in the area. They are now appealing to the government to step in and address what they describe as a worsening security crisis before more lives, and livelihoods, are put at risk.
