Thousands of supporters poured into Bungoma town on Sunday as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna headlined a major Linda Mwananchi rally, bringing to a close a high-energy two-day political tour of Western Kenya that also traversed Trans Nzoia County.
The rally at Posta Grounds attracted huge crowds from across Bungoma and neighboring counties, with supporters lining roads for hours to welcome the opposition leader during what organizers described as his homecoming.
The event is widely seen as one of the biggest political gatherings in the county this year and another show of the opposition’s growing mobilization efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
Roadshow draws enthusiastic reception
The day began with a church service before Sifuna and fellow opposition leaders embarked on a roadshow that traversed several towns before culminating in Bungoma.
The convoy made stopovers in Kiminini, Kamukuywa, Kimilili and Chwele, where hundreds of residents gathered along major roads to cheer the leaders, wave Kenyan flags and listen to brief roadside addresses.
By the time the delegation entered Bungoma town, traffic had slowed as supporters escorted the convoy to Posta Grounds, where thousands had already assembled awaiting the rally.
Linda Mwananchi movement gains momentum
The Bungoma meeting marked the climax of the Linda Mwananchi movement’s Western Kenya tour after a similarly well-attended rally in Kitale on Saturday.
Organizers said the tour is part of a wider grassroots mobilization campaign aimed at engaging wananchi on governance, accountability and the country’s political direction as the countdown to the 2027 elections gathers pace.
Sifuna sharpens criticism of government
During the roadshow and subsequent rally, Sifuna criticized President William Ruto’s administration, particularly the affordable housing program, while calling for greater accountability in government.
He urged Kenyans to remain actively engaged in national affairs and maintained that citizens have a constitutional right to participate in discussions about the country’s governance and economic future.
Western Kenya emerges as key political battleground
The Bungoma rally unfolded as President William Ruto attended the consecration and enthronement of the fourth Bishop of the ACK Diocese of Katakwa in Amagoro, Busia County, where he also criticized the opposition, describing it as a threat to the country’s economic progress.
The parallel engagements highlighted the growing political contest for influence in Western Kenya, a region expected to play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the 2027 election.
