Westlands MP and Bungoma gubernatorial aspirant Tim Wanyonyi was notably absent from Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma on Sunday, despite recent signs that he had thrown his weight behind the movement.
Wanyonyi’s absence drew attention after he had, in recent days, expressed support for Sifuna’s political agenda and joined efforts to mobilize residents ahead of the high-profile rally. His campaign team had also associated his 2027 gubernatorial bid with the Linda Mwananchi movement, raising expectations that he would attend the event.
The Bungoma rally attracted thousands of supporters and featured several opposition leaders, with Sifuna continuing his push to expand the Linda Mwananchi movement across Western Kenya. However, Wanyonyi was nowhere to be seen throughout the event, prompting questions among supporters and political observers.
Before the rally, Sifuna had publicly acknowledged holding discussions with Wanyonyi as part of his efforts to strengthen the movement in Bungoma County. The Nairobi senator had also expressed confidence that the county’s next governor would emerge from the Linda Mwananchi camp, mentioning Wanyonyi among the leaders he had engaged.
Wanyonyi’s apparent alignment with Sifuna had been viewed as a significant political development, particularly as he prepared for another bid for the Bungoma governorship in the 2027 general election.
Neither Wanyonyi nor his campaign team had issued a statement explaining his absence by the time of publication. Similarly, the Linda Mwananchi leadership did not comment on why the Westlands legislator failed to attend the rally.
His absence has since fueled speculation over whether it reflected a change in political strategy or was simply the result of personal or scheduling commitments. Until either side provides an explanation, the reasons behind Wanyonyi’s no-show remain unclear.
