President William Ruto has reassigned a key government coordination role previously held by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, transferring the responsibility to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in what observers describe as a significant restructuring of the Executive.
The changes, announced through an Executive Order, remove Kindiki from overseeing intergovernmental relations, a role that serves as a crucial link between the national government and county administrations. The function has now been placed under the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, headed by Musalia Mudavadi.
The move marks one of the most notable adjustments to the responsibilities of the Deputy President since Kindiki assumed office in November 2024. While he remains Deputy President, the reassignment has fueled political debate over the evolving balance of power within President Ruto’s administration.
According to reports, the transfer places Mudavadi at the center of coordination between the national and county governments, further expanding the mandate of the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s office. Analysts suggest the changes could strengthen coordination within government while also reshaping the political influence of senior officials ahead of the 2027 general election.
