Students at Bungoma National Polytechnic have announced plans to hold peaceful demonstrations on Monday over growing insecurity affecting those living outside the institution.
In a memo dated October 23, the students said several of their colleagues had recently been attacked, including a female student who was seriously injured. The memo also reported attacks on three male students, one of whom remains untraced.
“We request the administration to take immediate action to improve student safety and support the affected students,” the memo stated.
The appeal comes days after several people, including students, were arrested at a Linda Mwananchi rally at Buteyo Miti Park in West Sang’alo. It follows another security scare just weeks earlier, when police cracked down on Airforce One, a gang of former students who stayed on in the area after completing their studies.
The students say the planned demonstration is meant to push the administration to address their security concerns and give a clear response to their demands.
Speaking on behalf of the students, their president and college chairman, Emmanuel Musibulo, said the protest would be peaceful and orderly.
