Moi University student’s body retrieved after drowning at Kesses Falls

A third-year student from Moi University has been found dead after drowning in River Kesses, ending several days of intensive search and rescue efforts.

The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, when the student, who hails from Kisii County, went swimming with friends at Kesses Falls, a part of the river near the university that had swollen due to recent heavy rainfall.

Witnesses reported that the strong currents quickly overwhelmed him shortly after entering the water.

A coordinated search effort, led by the Uasin Gishu County fire brigade and supported by rescue divers and local volunteers, spanned three days. The student’s body was recovered today, Tuesday, 31 March 2026, and transported to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

The discovery has deeply affected the Moi University community, which had anxiously awaited updates amid fears that the body could be trapped in the river’s rocks and strong currents.

University officials, local leaders, and emergency responders have called on students and residents to exercise extreme caution around rivers and waterfalls, particularly during and after heavy rains, when water levels rise and currents strengthen.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances that led to the drowning.
