Kisumu is set to host a high-stakes political rally this Sunday as the Linda Mwananchi brigade makes its stop in the lakeside city, amid rising tensions and sharp exchanges among leaders.
The event, scheduled to take place at Owuor Grounds, has sparked debate within political circles, particularly among leaders affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
In the days leading up to the rally, divisions have emerged within ODM, with some leaders questioning the motive and timing of the gathering. Kisumu Woman Rep Ruth Odinga has defended the rally, warning against any attempts to block it and insisting that such moves would undermine constitutional freedoms. On the other hand, Usenge MP Samuel Atandi has criticized the organizers, accusing them of disrespecting party leadership and calling for clarity on the rally’s agenda.
Security has also taken center stage ahead of the event. Police IG Douglas Kanja has assured residents that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the rally proceeds peacefully, while cautioning against any form of violence or disorder.
The rally is expected to attract several prominent political figures, including Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Godfrey Osotsi and Richard Onyonka, highlighting its significance in shaping political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Organizers of the Linda Mwananchi tour say the rally is aimed at addressing key issues affecting citizens, including the rising cost of living, taxation, and governance. However, analysts view the Kisumu stop as a critical test of political influence and unity within the opposition, as leaders position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
