Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has warned that he could leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if the party fails to address concerns raised by leaders from Western Kenya.
Speaking at a recent public event in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, Oparanya criticised the party leadership, accusing it of sidelining the Western region despite its consistent support for ODM over the years. He said leaders and residents from the region feel excluded from key decision-making processes and power-sharing arrangements.
“I want to tell those leaders of ODM, this time, do not take us for granted. If they do not respect us, we will quit,” Oparanya said.
The former Kakamega governor noted that Western Kenya has played a significant role in strengthening ODM politically and loyally supported the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga but now risks being overlooked amid ongoing internal wrangles within the party.
He warned that failure to address the concerns could lead to a political shift in the region ahead of the next general election.
Oparanya also indicated that his stance is aimed at pushing for unity and recognition of Western Kenya interests, rather than advancing personal political ambitions.
His remarks come at a time when ODM is facing internal tensions and leadership disputes, raising questions about cohesion within one of Kenya’s major political parties.
