Bukusu elders summon Natembeya, Wamboka over circumcision songs used to mock Wetang’ula at political rally

Bukusu elders have summoned Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka following the use of traditional circumcision songs during a political rally in Bungoma County.

The elders accused leaders allied to the opposition of disrespecting Bukusu cultural practices after the songs were allegedly used to target National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula during the rally held in Bumula on Saturday, May 10.

Speaking during a press briefing, Bukusu Council of Elders chairperson Richard Walukano said the leaders had been summoned to explain why sacred cultural songs were used in a political gathering.

Walukano warned that traditional circumcision songs should not be used to insult or demean leaders, saying the practice goes against Bukusu customs and traditions.

The rally, organised by Wamboka, was attended by Natembeya and other politicians associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement. Videos circulating online showed crowds chanting and singing traditional songs as leaders addressed residents.

The elders further cautioned politicians against dragging cultural practices into political battles, maintaining that initiation songs hold deep cultural significance within the Bukusu community.

Another group of elders from Trans Nzoia, led by former Kapomboi MCA Ben Mulipuko, also condemned the incident and called on the leaders involved to apologise to Wetang’ula.

The elders stated that leaders must uphold respect and unity within the community regardless of political differences.
