Germany, Netherlands crash out as Brazil see off Japan to reach Round of 16

It was a dramatic night in the World Cup Round of 32 as two European heavyweights, Germany and Netherlands, were both eliminated on penalties, while Brazil secured their place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought win over Japan.

Germany’s clash ended in heartbreak after a tense 1–1 draw with Paraguay that stretched into a penalty shootout. Despite showing resilience during regulation time, they faltered in the decisive moment, crashing out 4–3 on penalties in a result that will raise serious questions back home.

Later in the day, the Netherlands suffered a similar fate against Morocco. In a tightly contested match that also ended 1–1 after extra time, the Dutch side were edged out 3–2 in the shootout, ending their tournament earlier than expected.

The only consolation for the continent came from Brazil, who delivered when it mattered most. Facing a disciplined Japanese side, Brazil held their nerve in a 2–1 victory, with their attacking quality proving decisive in securing progression to the Round of 16.

For Germany and the Netherlands, the exits mark a disappointing end to campaigns that carried high expectations. For Brazil, however, the win reinforces their status as strong contenders as the tournament heads into its knockout stages.
