Haaland’s late double sends Norway into history as Brazil crash out of World Cup

Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice to inspire Norway to a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil and book a historic place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Scandinavian side produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, knocking out the five-time world champions in a dramatic Round of 16 encounter after a disciplined defensive display and a clinical late attacking surge.

Brazil had an opportunity to seize control in the first half after being awarded a penalty following a VAR review. However, Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a superb save to deny Bruno Guimarães from the spot, preserving the deadlock and giving his side renewed belief.

The South Americans dominated possession for much of the match and later introduced experienced stars Neymar and Endrick from the bench in search of a breakthrough. Despite their attacking pressure, Norway remained compact and dangerous on the counterattack.

The decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute when Andreas Schjelderup whipped in a precise cross that Haaland met with a powerful header, leaving goalkeeper Alisson with no chance and sending Norwegian supporters into celebration.

With Brazil committing more players forward in pursuit of an equaliser, Norway struck again deep into stoppage time. Oscar Bobb found Haaland with a perfectly weighted pass, and the Manchester City striker calmly finished to double his side’s advantage and complete his brace.

Brazil managed to pull one goal back moments later after being awarded another penalty, which Neymar converted. However, the goal came too late to alter the outcome as Norway held on to complete a famous victory.

The result marks one of the greatest achievements in Norwegian football history, with the nation reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time. After eliminating Ivory Coast in the Round of 32, Norway has now claimed another major scalp and will face the winner of the clash between England and Mexico in the last eight.

For Brazil, the defeat brings a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign despite entering the knockout stage as one of the tournament favourites. Norway, meanwhile, marches on with growing confidence, led by the brilliance of Haaland, whose two goals once again highlighted why he remains one of the world’s most feared strikers.
