Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa escaped unhurt on Thursday after a political meeting in Bungoma County turned chaotic, forcing his security team to evacuate him as rival groups clashed.
Videos shared widely on social media captured scenes of disorder at Amatulla Stadium in Kimilili, where supporters were seen exchanging blows and shouting slogans as the gathering descended into violence, leaving several people injured.
Barasa’s convoy also sustained significant damage during the confrontation as sections of the crowd chanted “Sisi ni Sifuna!” and “Wantam!” in apparent protest.
Accounts from witnesses indicate that tensions flared after cash handouts distributed during the event reportedly ran out before everyone in attendance had received money, triggering frustration among some supporters.
One witness alleged that the legislator became upset and instructed residents to disperse without receiving the promised handouts.
“It is said that the MP became angry for no apparent reason and asked residents to go home without receiving their attendance dues. He then allegedly sent his bodyguards, who started harassing people. When they were overpowered, gunshots followed,” the witness claimed.
The claims could not be independently verified.
Barasa, who has declared his bid for the Bungoma governorship in the 2027 general election, was swiftly escorted from the venue by his security team as calm was gradually restored.
