Police officers in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, have launched investigations after a woman from Kisangula Village, Lumakanda Ward, allegedly gave birth to a baby girl and secretly buried the newborn in a farm five days ago.
The incident came to light after the woman’s sisters-in-law became suspicious when the pregnancy she had been carrying suddenly disappeared.
According to Dennis Iviria, Grace Agona and Magret Masitsa, the suspect’s relatives, they had seen her the previous week while they were on their way to school. One of them said she later saw the woman on Friday and noticed that the pregnancy was no longer visible, despite the woman being close to delivery.
“We were with her last Wednesday as we were going to school. On Friday, she passed by my home, and the pregnancy was no longer visible. She was almost due to give birth, but her condition did not make me feel comfortable,” one of her sisters-in-law said.
Dennis Iviria said he conducted his own inquiries after becoming suspicious and discovered that the woman had allegedly given birth and buried the newborn on her farm.He further claimed that a blood-stained knife was found at the scene, raising further suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.
The incident has shocked and saddened residents and family members, who said the woman had no known dispute with anyone and could have given birth and raised the child.
Police officers from Lumakanda Police Station retrieved the body of the newborn, which has been preserved at the mortuary at Village of Hope.
The suspect is currently being held at Lumakanda Police Station as investigations continue and is expected to be arraigned in court.
