Four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma County have died in a road accident at Mai Mahiu, with five others from the business community injured.

According to Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, the traders were travelling to Karatina to procure groceries when the accident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Mercyline Wefwafwa, Centrine Juma, Jane Baraza, and a trader known only as Anthony—all members of Chwele’s tomato-trading community.

President offers condolences

President William Ruto issued a statement mourning the traders, saying, “We are saddened by the death of four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma County who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Mai Mahiu.”

The Head of State extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, who confirmed the deaths, pledged the county government’s support to the affected families. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga arranged transport to help grieving relatives travel to Mai Mahiu to bring their loved ones home, accompanied by area MCA Eric Wekesa.
